I am currently working in a building that has a large number of high-needs learners, who are on an alternate curriculum program known as Verbal Behavior Training. Verbal Behavior (VB) therapy teaches communication and language. It is based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and the theories of behaviorist B.F. Skinner. This approach encourages people with autism to learn language by connecting words with their purposes. The student learns that words can help them get desired objects or results. In a typical session, the teacher asks a series of questions that combine easy and hard requests. This allows the student to be successful more often and reduces frustration. The teacher should vary the situations and instructions in ways that keep the student interested. Students receive multiple sessions throughout the day. The materials I am requesting will are the basic supplies (aside from reinforcers) to create a program that will follow students throughout their entire academic career. We start the programming when they are in kindergarten and continue to add to it as they age and develop different skill sets. We use a lot of notecards, labels, and card boxes. Rather than go to the expense of requesting packs of notecards (each color has a skillset), I am asking for reams of card stock that can be cut to size and go further and supply more. Also part of the program is an assessment on language skills, which uses a lot of paper and graphs. As skills are learned they are graphed as well. This data shows student growth over time (could be years). I am asking for the iPad to help conserve the paper copies and graphs so that I can collect data and assess in a digital manner and create friendly graphs that are easily interpreted.
