My 5th grade math classroom is a safe space where students are not only allowed to "talk," they are encouraged to explore, think critically, collaborate, and help one another make connections! If you walk into my room on any given day, you might see a group working on a mathematical scavenger hunt, while another group practices fluency with a standards-based game. You might then see students working together to solve a story problem. And finally, you'll see students receiving intervention at our small-group table. We are organized chaos, and we enjoy learning! The students at my school are incredible. When I show them love and respect, they reciprocate it with a passion for learning. They persevere through difficult problems and often ask for challenges. Like many adults, even as a teacher, I sometimes underestimate a child's ability to love themselves and each other, but at my school I see this time and again.
