Most high school students have learned how to cook basic meals while using basic kitchen tools. Our students generally struggle to master these independent living concepts due to their disabilities. The ultimate goal is to prepare our students for their future by teaching them how to prepare and serve basic meals under supervision, so that they can do it at home on their own. We will teach meal planning and create meals that students can take home to share with their families through the lessons that we learn using the tools purchased through this project. WE INTEGRATE ALL CORE SUBJECTS THROUGH OUR DAILY LIVING CLASS. MATH - measurement, math facts, money & time SCIENCE- experiment with ingredients, textures, temperatures, & flavors LANGUAGE ARTS - write grocery lists, follow recipes SOCIAL STUDIES - introduce new recipes from other regions and cultures We have requested many items that will make our kitchen feel more like home! Every cook needs an apron so we have requested a multi-colored set. The measuring cups and spoons will be used to learn how to measure all of the wet and dry ingredients that are necessary to prepare recipes. The cookware set will be used to learn how to prepare healthy meals and serve them on oven and dishwasher safe dishware with clip resistant cups and silverware. The items that we have in our kitchen are all worn out hand-me-downs that teachers have brought from home over the years. Our students deserve to have the opportunity to use tools that were manufactured before they were even school aged. Successfully learning to use these items will allow them to make progress towards their academic and future living goals, as well as teach them valuable job skills.
