My students are English Language Learners and my classroom is a fifth grade Sheltered English Immersion classroom. My students all come from Cape Verde and they arrive in this country speaking either Portuguese or Cape Verdean Creole, depending upon the island where they were born. My students are between 10 and 11 years old, and are often being exposed to the English language for the first time. In order for my students to become successful in both speaking and reading English, I need to teach the basic literacy skills, such as recognition and sounds of the alphabet. My students are so eager to learn! Imagine arriving in a new country and being expected to learn in a language you do not yet know? I am often the first person that they meet who introduces them to our culture, our language, and our world. I feel so honored to be in this position, helping our young immigrants realize the American Dream.
