My 100 6th grade reading students are anything but remedial and reluctant. They are bright, innovative, creative, and thirsty to exercise their minds and expand their horizons. Although many of my students have not yet had that "AHA" moment with a text or fallen in love with a book, they are at that tipping point and with the right coaching and access to resources, I will soon be teaching 100 lifelong readers and scholars. My middle school is small but strong in our sense of school culture and community, and we are one of the oldest charter schools in our city. We serve in a high poverty community, and the majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
