I teach in an Early College program in a large urban district in Texas. Our students come from across the district. We are not a magnet; we accept any student who is eager and ready to work. That means I have students with a wide range of reading abilities, some as low as 5th grade, that I am preparing for college level work in two years. For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to go to college. In my classroom, we work to develop literacy skills, but also build social, emotional, and organizational skills that are so crucial for postsecondary success. In the time I have my students, I strive not only to engage them in meaningful and relevant learning, but also encourage them to believe in their own abilities - developing their literacy skills, highlighting their successes, and instilling a greater awareness of the world around them.
