Our school library serves 945 PreK through 5th grade scholars in a Title 1, urban school. Over 75% of our students live in economically disadvantaged households. Many of our students' only exposure to books are at school because of their socioeconomic status, so being able to take home books is special to our scholars. Our students are able to check out 2 books per session to take home and enjoy, but with the growing number of students at our school, we do not have enough books that are on our students' reading level. Most of our students are below grade level in reading and struggle to find books that are both interesting and appropriate for them. North Carolina has mandated that all 3rd grade students must be at grade level in language arts. This drives our school to push even harder for student success, but we want our students to enjoy the process while reaching their goals.
