I have dreamed of being a teacher since I was in elementary school. Almost twenty years later, I am living my dream, teaching third grade in California. I teach at an urban, high-poverty school where my students face many obstacles in the way of their learning. Most come to school dirty, hungry, and tired. Often the breakfast and lunch they eat at school will be their only food that day. My students frequently come to school in the same clothes as the day before. Their classroom desk is the only place they can call their own since most often they share not only a room, but also a bed with other family members.
