Teaching color mixing is a standard in the art curriculum. I would like to teach this concept through paper marbling. Students will use shaving cream and food coloring to create marbled papers, while discussing the art concept of mixing primary colors to make other colors and the science of how it works. Students will learn the concepts of printmaking, such as the difference between pulling a mono-print and serial prints. Younger students will focus on creating secondary colors, while grades 4-6 will be encouraged to make tertiary colors. This project will provide a tactile way for students to explore the concepts of color mixing, and the result will be a Wayne Thiebaud inspired ice cream cone collages for grades K-3 and a bookmark with a tassel that they can use for grades 4-6. Being able to create the marbled papers will connect to these additional lessons about art concepts to extend our learning in the following ways. K-3 will learn about the work of painter Wayne Thiebaud and use their papers to create an ice cream cone collage in which each scoop is a different secondary color made by two primaries. Grades 4-6 will use their papers to create a bookmark that they will decorate with hand lettering, laminate and they will learn fiber arts to create a yarn tassel to add to it. Having a custom made and personalized bookmark will encourage kids to read chapter books in their Language Arts Classes.
