Historically, students have only learned recorder and xylophone in music. While they enjoy these instruments, they often leave them at the elementary school level, never to touch them again once they move on. Providing ukuleles to my students launches them into the opportunity to be lifelong musicians. My main focus this year with my students has been on their perception of themselves. At the beginning of the year, very few of them considered themselves to be musicians. After a year spent together, their musical abilities have greatly expanded, but also their self identity as musicians. Providing my students with ukuleles would give them both a different music curriculum, but also would help provide skills that they can use the rest of their lives.
