I am the Education Specialist for the Inclusion Program at Garfield Elementary School currently serves 12 students in grades K-5. All students are fully included in general education classrooms. They have Individualized Education Programs and are eligible for special education services under the categories of Autism, Specific Learning Disability, Speech and Language Impairment, and Orthopedic Impairment. My students have significant learning and social communication challenges in addition to difficulties with behavioral, emotional, and sensory regulation. At our school, 54% of students are English Language Learners and 93% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Despite these challenges, my students are incredibly resilient. They are eager to learn and do their best. Our school district is underfunded but our students still deserve the resources to meet their individual needs.
