I do my best to ensure that my classroom is a safe and comfortable learning environment for every child who walks through the door. An important part of making this happen involves being intentional about the physical environment of my classroom, such as the floor plan and furniture. Last year, I had 23 first graders in my class. This year, I will have between 30 and 35. My classroom was crowded enough with just 23 desks, and I fear that adding at least 10 more will compromise my students' physical learning environment.
I have seen firsthand how deeply enriched learning becomes when children are given the opportunity to actively engage with their peers and explore the world around them, and I fear that this cannot be fully achieved if our classroom is crowded with nearly 35 desks. We are in need of a more space-efficient seating alternative, and I invite you to help us out! I am asking for 10 trapezoid activity tables to use in place of our existing student desks.
Making the switch from individual desks to group tables will undoubtedly give students more space to move around the room as they actively learn and explore. However, even more importantly, these group tables will strengthen our classroom community by providing authentic opportunities for students to interact with each other and further develop essential life skills, such as cooperation and teamwork.
