My 6th graders are part of New York's at-risk population. Most have been raised in neighborhoods with high crime rates and low graduation rates. Nearly all are below their grade level for reading and most scored a Level 1 or 2 on their ELA state test. Not surprisingly, those who are on-grade level are those who have access to books at home. They are all, however, eager to learn and have already fallen in love with reading. In only a few short weeks, they have devoured the books we have and are clamoring for more. Lacking the resources at home to read, and feed not only their below-level literacy levels, but their malleable imaginations, they rely on school to provide what they need to enrich their lives. Our classroom library is poised to feed our children's minds, but my readers have already devoured our books and are clamoring for more!
