Half of the reading standards for sixth grade students are focused on non-fiction texts, yet less than ten percent of my students last year checked out non-fiction from our school or class libraries. Many of my kiddos have never been exposed to interesting, well written non-fiction. I would like to use the Time for Kids magazines to incorporate a weekly current event assignment into my curriculum this year. Kids would use them to do things like coming up with their own solutions to issues described in articles, creating posters for upcoming events, writing letters to the editor explaining their stance on an issue, or doing a full research project on a topic.
