Just hearing the name Shakespeare strikes fear into many students. I can't read this! This isn't even English! Why did Shakespeare have to make things so complicated? These are just a few of the statements my students have made when we begin reading any of Shakespeare's plays. Introducing students to Shakespeare's Macbeth via Macbeth: A Graphic Novel will instantly make the story accessible for them. As a highly visual group, they will be able to use the illustrations to help make meaning of the text. This introduction paired with No Fear Shakespeare will allow students to read Macbeth with confidence and understanding. Keep in mind that most of these English Language Learners must take the English words, translate them into their native language, and then retranslate that back into English in order to make meaning. These sources will facilitate the process for them.
