I teach a group of bilingual second graders in the Chicago suburbs. Our school is diverse and nearly all of my students are children of poverty. My students families come mainly from Mexico and my students and their families are working hard to learn English. Learning another language is tough, but my students are motivated! They are an inspiration - working hard to learn Spanish and English. In second grade we continue to build reading skills in Spanish and English. However, in third grade they will transition to all English and we are working hard to help make that a successful transition!
