My classroom is a small cozy space, as my class size is smaller. For many students in my class, they contend with having a reading disability. For most reading is a chore that they despise doing. For many, their struggles with reading negatively impact their learning across all curriculums. I started with allowing my students to independently read anywhere in the classroom and it made a huge difference in their motivation. I had 1 rug, 1 camping chair, desks and a table. Most days it was a race to get to the comfy spots, like the rug and the camping chair. Those spots became a high commodity in my classroom. So much so I had to keep track of who's turn it was. My dream is to have all flexible seating, creating a space that is motivating and relaxing to learn in. Many of my middle school students are self conscious that they have to attend a resource language arts class. Providing them with an atmosphere that is special and "cool" and allows for seating choice, will set apart my classroom as the place to be and give students an opportunity to learn where they will do their best learning. A language arts lounge if you will. I am looking for bean bag chairs, poufs, a futon and a coffee table to provide for flexible seating options for my students. Having the flexibility to move about the room during class and sit in different areas will help those who need a way to channel their excess energy.
