A class set of ukuleles will help my students take their music education to the next level, as the instrument offers many advantages for young students. The small size of the ukulele makes it comfortable for children to hold and the instruments are also lightweight and portable, making it easier to travel should we ever need to do so for a performance. Ukuleles are more affordable than many other instruments, have a pleasant mellow sound, and some of the playing techniques can transfer to other instruments, like the guitar. Additionally, ukulele lends itself easily to the key of C Major, which will make it easier for us to add other pitched instruments to our ensemble, such as soprano recorder, xylophones and metallophones, and pitched percussion pipes. Playing ukulele while singing will enhance students' music skills and provide an extra level of difficulty. Students will keep the steady beat or rhythm pattern in the right hand (strumming), finger a chord in the left hand, all while singing a separate melody. On ukuleles, students will learn about the characteristics of different chords (major, minor, 7ths, etc.) and how to play them. We will talk about strumming technique, and start with strumming the steady beat while singing and work towards learning strumming patterns that demonstrate harmonic rhythm. We will also work towards learning to finger pick melodies as well. My students have demonstrated such a love of music through dancing, singing, and playing percussion instruments; this project will enhance the music skills they have already learned and help them take it to the next level!
