My K-3 students are dying to unleash their creativity! Please help us set up a mini-maker space in the libraries! Students come to the library and hear a traditional story, but then they get creative! Students are asked to identify a problem in the story they can solve and then they will use the blocks and supplies to plan, design, build, test, and improve a solution. For example, after hearing the story Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beatty, students are able to identify that Iggy and his classmates needed to build a bridge to get off the island they were stranded on during a field trip. Students are asked to come up with their own solution to this problem and use the maker space supplies to create a prototype. Today's students need to learn skills and dispositions that will serve them well throughout their academic and adult careers. Maker spaces teach collaboration skills, design thinking, persistence, creative problem solving, and innovation skills in a fun, low-risk setting. If you are picturing an elementary school library as a quiet place where students come to get books and told to SHHHHHHH, you should think again! Our libraries are just really big classrooms with lots of books. They are places to inquire and explore. Learning is sometimes loud and messy! Students deserve the time and space to explore their creativity. Please help me give them that opportunity!
