My wonderful students come from various backgrounds that make them each unique. They are predominantly African American and Latino boys and girls of the ages between 14-16. They are 9th grade students identified as level one readers, which means they are the lowest readers enrolled in an urban school that lack many of the resources that will bolster their skill sets. They lack enthusiasm about books, because year after year they've failed and become ever increasingly disenchanted with reading. Opportunity and resources go hand in hand in an effort to close the achievement gap. Our children deserve both!
