According to The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), Social and Emotional Learning is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. I teach secondary English Language Arts; I want my students to read texts that are relevant to their stage of life and can help them in the years to come. I am required to teach my students how to read and analyze informational texts. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and A Teen's Guide to the 5 Love Languages are two excellent examples of informational texts that will help my students learn more about themselves and how to interact with the world around them. I can also use these books to teach our state's and school district's standards for English Language Arts. Merrell's Strong Teens Curriculum and the Feeling Better Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Workbook for Teens are supplemental resources that can reinforce the two books mentioned above. I can use these resources to help my students develop social and emotional skills and strategies that are so necessary for this digital age.
