I have requested the Forensic PCR Investigation Amplification and Electrophoresis Kit for my freshmen biology students. These students have shown previous interest in forensics and criminal investigation applications of biology and I believe they would enjoy being able to do a version of what actual forensic scientists do. My upper level biology students would be using the PTC Extraction, Amplification, and Electrophoresis Kit to extract their own DNA and visualize their genotype for the ability to taste PTC, and then compare their genotype to their actual phenotype. My classroom is already equipped with a PCR thermocycler and electrophoresis chambers, purchased using a grant last year. My students learn about genetics, DNA, and biotechnology and these materials would give them the ability to perform hands-on experiments in these areas, explore real-world applications of what they are learning, and even get to "see" their own DNA in relation to an observable trait.
