The materials and resources requested for this project will be used to create a calm down space for my DHH preschoolers. Like any three or four-year-olds, emotions are tough. I want to get away from punishing tough feelings and behaviors with yelling and time-outs and approach them using healthy emotional strategies. This area would be designed to help students learn self-care strategies as well as understanding the tools to cope with confusing or unwanted feelings that may come up throughout the school day.
Emotional health is an area of education that has been overlooked or has been placed low on the priority list in relation to many other academic subjects. Teaching children appropriate ways to manage their many emotions will have a positive ripple effect into other areas of their personal and educational lives.
The area I want to create in my classroom will be made comfortable and approachable with flexible seating pillows and a floor mat for students to access anytime throughout the day. This area will also provide students an outlet to express their negative feelings in a positive way. In this spaces students will have opportunities to express how they feel through writing, learn how to manage their emotions through breathing and stretching techniques using yoga, or simply using this space as a place to cool down independently. This space will include visual supports and tools such as calming books and posters for students to independently use in the area. There will also be opportunities to write using a small work station, as well as fidgets to use during their time in this area.
