Despite being of high school age, many of my students enter school several grade levels below in literacy skills, both in their home language and English. Furthermore, their learning disabilities has a direct impact on their ability to acquire and process content information in English. Add a history of interrupted education and difficult affective factors like living in temporary housing and experiencing difficulty adjusting to the US, many of my students have not had the resources to make significant gains in their academic and personal growth. Furthermore, we find that parents want to help their child, but do not feel equipped to support their child since they themselves are new to the country. With the resources we receive, the hope is to address all the needs of our students and their families, including, but not limited to, academic supports, social-emotional supports, and basic care and hygiene.
