Students have trouble visualizing fractions. Fraction strips help them to see the relationship between the fraction pieces. Any math manipulative will help students to visualize and better understand the concept. While not all students need this, most do. We all learn in our own ways and being able to help each student in the way they learn is very important to me. Differentiation isn't just about different worksheets but different styles of learning and meeting the students on their level! These math manipulatives will be used on a daily basis and in a number of ways! They will be used in math, of course. But they will also be used in other subject areas as we watch how different subjects overlap! The Fraction tiles and foam fractions will be used to show the difference in fractions. They will help students visualize the difference between 1/2 and 1/4. Most students think that 1/4 is larger because 4 is larger than 2. The fraction strips and foam fractions will visually show them that using the same size whole that 1/2 is larger. They will be able to use these manipulatives when first learning about fractions and working through word problems. The Gallon balance kit and measurement set will help students to visually see the difference in measurements. They will be able to put 1 gallon and one side of the balance and add quarts to the other side to find out how many quarts would equal one gallon. We make gallon men currently but adding these hands-on activities would be very beneficial to the students. The I have, Who has math games are great ways to check for understanding in math and make things a little more fun.
