Kumu Alston is the Hawaiian Studies Teacher at President Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, known for his innovative approach to teaching. Drawing on his experience in theatre for young audiences, he strives to integrate non-traditional methods into his curriculum such as place-based learning, social-emotional learning, and differentiated instruction. JES is located in the bustling Waikiki area, right across from the Honolulu Zoo. Interestingly, more than half of the students come from diverse backgrounds such as Black, Latino, Native American, and/or Native Hawaiian, and over 50% of them are from low-income households, qualifying JES as a Title I school. Unfortunately, funding is limited, so any donations or support would be greatly appreciated.
