As our students inquire and seek knowledge on the multi-faceted culturally diverse City of Chicago - they will discover their own unique personal art to research and find how it is related to our mathematical way of thinking. The students will develop questions, research mediums, sketch their own versions of the artists rendering to finally create their own culminating piece of art. Using their research, open-mindedness and reflection, the students will bridge their artist, mathematics and take a risk - to create their own unique piece based on their research and reflection of the genre, artist tendencies, patterns, whatever they discover! The Golden Ratio and the Fibonacci Sequence can be found all throughout art and nature. In mathematics, beauty lies in finding patterns within the numbers and finding proportions that can translate into artistic expression, specifically with Michelangelo and DaVinci. We will explore the artists within Chicago and discover and inquire how mathematical concepts such as ratios, patterns, expressions can be found in Art. The items that I am requesting are from an art store. Students will go back in the time of Michelangelo and DaVinci and using the materials we have requested, take their canvas, their palate and their paint brushes to create art based on any fundamental concept of mathematics. Whether they sketch the golden Ratio or create their own proportionally correct Pieta,or tessellate as M.C. Escher did, these materials allow the students to be their own artists, just as the great artists of the 15th century.
