I teach computer science at two schools in my district. These schools are made up of very diverse populations of students. The majority of the students in both schools qualify for free or reduced lunches. Due to the low, socio-economic environment from which they come, their learning experiences are often limited to within the school walls. They don't get the opportunities to explore and experience the environment and culture beyond their neighborhood. Therefore, as teachers, we have to find ways to bridge the gaps between their background knowledge and comprehending and mastering the skills with which they are presented. Due to the pressure of standardized testing, there is little time to focus on skills that they'll need to be successful in the future. As the computer science teacher, I feel that it is my responsibility to give them the opportunities to experience and learn these skills.
