My students attend a suburban school in central Texas. Most of my students are economically disadvantaged, receive free lunch and spend their free time caring for younger siblings. They are strong and resilient, and many are below grade level academically. They stand at the bottom of a hole that is only getting deeper each year. At a critical age, when so many students start to shut down in school, my students are starting to love reading and writing. Many spend a large portion of their of the day in literacy classes because they have remedial classes instead of electives. I want to start the school year with motivating books for my kids.
