The students in my school are economically disadvantaged, and many of them do not have the home support to help them learn to read and to be successful in school. As a reading specialist, I see the students that are the farthest behind. My students are reading one to three grade levels below where they should be, and every year that passes is another year they fall farther behind and the opportunity to close the reading gap fizzles away. They are middle school students, and the opportunities for them to catch up to their peers are numbered. The new Common Core State Standards are requiring students to think, read and perform at much higher levels, but my students are not able to reach those expectations because they cannot fully comprehend the required readings independently. They deserve the same opportunities as everyone else, but unfortunately my district cannot afford to buy them materials at their reading level. We are asking for your generous help by giving them a chance to succeed!
