The high interest books that I have chosen will make a huge impact on my students' learning. I teach in a highly diverse, urban district where it is a struggle at times to get students to read and reading is often not encouraged at home. In order to foster an interest in reading, I have set aside time for students to read a book of their choice during silent, sustained reading. The key here is that they are choosing the book and by giving them the freedom, they start to see reading in a different light. I have carefully chosen books that deal with current issues that my students may be going through. For example, The Hate U Give is a teenagers perspective about race relations in an urban area among residents and the police. Students will choose a book that interests them, read for 20 minutes, twice a week in class and then write about this book in their journals. In the past, once students who are resistant to reading, have found THE book that they enjoy and can connect to, it opens a whole new world for them.
