Every day, I see my students bright and excited faces who are ready to read their new books. However, teaching in a title one ESL school has really shown me how hard learning to read can be for English learners and students who do not have books at home. They are so motivated but get very discouraged when they do not have the vocabulary to use the picture or the understand the meaning of a story to help support them in word solving. By getting nonfiction early level books, I can help build my students' vocabulary with books about our world. My students learn best when incorporating topics that are familiar to them, as they are filled with unfamiliar nuances living in their new country. The leapfrog reader will also help my students with developing phonics and print skills. Many of my students come to school with very few literacy experiences and are lacking basic skills of reading.
