Engaged readers are higher achievers! Our school currently conducts daily Guided Reading groups to instruct students at their individual levels. Giving students the chance to interact with books in small group settings and take part in tailored lessons is optimal for learning and growth. This method has worked very well for our struggling readers. It is our plan to engage our higher level readers in a similar manner through the formation of literacy circles. Putting these challenging texts in the hands of our students will open up opportunities for them to collaboratively examine, reflect, and respond to literature. Students will have the opportunity to select their books and hold open discussions to share their unique thoughts. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the text while applying critical thinking skills. Due to COVID-19 our school has split our students into two sessions; each meeting for three hours per day in-person. This limits the amount of instruction that can be done daily. It would be incredibly beneficial for our students to be able to take one of these books home to read so they can come to school the following day ready to discuss.
