My students are kindergarteners from a city in Texas home to a Professional Basketball team and a few historic landmarks. But this city is also home to my students who live in neighborhoods that are not new to drug abuse, high crime, and high poverty. As one of the largest cities in the country, it's easy to see how my students could get lost in the shuffle. But if people would take the time, they would see that my students deserve to have the opportunities to succeed, thrive, laugh, and play. My students are 80% Hispanic and 20% African-American. They like to learn through song, enjoy watching iCarly and SpongeBob Squarepants, and like showing off their latest dance moves. Some of them want to be teachers, veterinarians, writers, and artists-just to name a few. They want to be wives and husbands. They can be hilarious and serious, despite what others may think...they are SO smart!
