I have found that one of best ways to build community in my classroom is through board games. My students start each school day playing board games with friends. I choose games that support problem-solving, cooperation, and critical thinking skills. Most of these have been fan favorites in my classroom and are now missing pieces and falling apart after years of play. I believe board games are the gateway to enhancing learning for my students and building community in the classroom. I have seen children become fast friends over a favorite game, positively negotiate with friends over what game to play, and successfully and positively manage emotions while playing board games.
