I am asking for iPads in my classroom to begin coding stations and for the use of virtual field trips. I teach all the students in my building, many of these students are from low income families and do not have the funds available for such technologies or even sometimes to get outside of our town. I am wanting to focus on coding in the classroom to have our kids on a level playing field as students from more affluent schools when they get out into the real world. I went to a technology conference last week and went to several classes about coding. I was amazed at what students in other areas of our state were doing with coding, and our students have not been given those same opportunities. I felt awful and came right back to order coding software and games. The problem is, our school does not use iPads. Many of the programs available run off of apps, so students will need the iPads to begin coding. I am overly excited about teaching these kids coding and allowing them to create codes and even their own video games! These iPads will allow these things to happen. Another use for the iPads in the classroom will be virtual field trips. I have been teaching at this school for 11 years and have been on only 3 field trips, our kids just cannot afford to go! The iPads offer a chance for teachers to create and assign virtual field trips for the kids. If they cannot actually go far away, at least we can offer the opportunity for them to see around the world.
