We need snacks (and books)! My students will tell you “I don’t read.” But they do eat, and they like comics and memes. In order for them to have voice and agency In the world, they need to see how reading broadens their horizons, and connects us to each other. This is harder to do when we are in a virtual environment. (I’ve done what I can: I’ve driven to kids’ homes to drop off books, I’ve sent books through the mail, and I’ve sent letters and notes of encouragement home to my kids. I need more envelopes, stamps, and snacks to reward their grit and perseverance. Through the mail, I’d like to give my students more diverse books, and more graphic novels, to get them connected to reading. Then I’d like to celebrate their accomplishments with a small snack. Never underestimate the power of a good book (and a sweet or salty snack!)
