My students are an eclectic group in many ways - ability, race, socio-economic status, interests. They are all, however, quickly moving out of childhood and into adolescence. Most of the students that I work with have a very limited worldview, accustomed only to the things that are nearby. Some do not see a future for themselves outside of the neighborhood where they live. It is through text and literature that my students gain various perspectives. Their future begins to change shape as they realize that other options exist. They are naturally curious and intrigued by current events, by situations that are occurring around the world to people very similar to themselves. The excitement and interest pours out of my students when we discuss global happenings; they are captivated.
