I teach in a large, urban district, and my students are from very diverse backgrounds -- linguistically, culturally, ethnically, and economically. The class is taught both in English and Spanish, to accommodate the needs of the many English language learners in my class. Many of my students have moved and/or changed schools frequently, due to family circumstances or the fact that the school where I teach has a history of low academic performance. Now that the school is in the process of being officially turned around, with new administrators and teachers who are committed to doing whatever it takes to close the gaping achievement gap that exists in our community, the students and families who have come back to our school welcome the drastic, positive changes taking place.
