My students are each so special in their own way. They teach me something new every day. I teach a special education self- contained significantly developmentally delayed (SDD) 1st grade class. That eligibility covers a wide range of disabilities, but as far as they are concerned, they are no different from other first graders. They happily support each other with kind words and helpful hands. My students' intellectual abilities range from Pre-K to 1st grade. Their excitement and enthusiasm about learning is most evident when they realize they know the answer to a question. Smiling, laughing, energetic, loving, and eager to learn are all words I'd use to describe my students. We are a Title-1 school with a poverty rate of 96% and a free and reduced lunch rate of 93%. The parents of these wonderful children work hard to provide for them, but are not able to indulge them in creative or imaginative learning experiences. That has become my responsibility.
