Among the most accomplished and legendary teams of middle schools, no team is considered to have students more awesome or more intelligent than the mighty 8th grade science team. Although many of their backgrounds set them up to fail, they rank academic achievement and excellent behavior high priority and have set the following big goals for the 2010-2011 academic school year: •82% mastery on all assessments •15% increase in the number of students scoring proficient and advanced on the end of the year assessment •9th grade ready and college bound •Real-life connections with science. They want to get in the game of learning. By getting in the game they mean own their own learning. What does ownership look like? Monopoly boards line the walls of our classroom so that students can track their mastery of the 73 grade level expectations we will cover this school year and students track the progress of their growth from pre-test to post-test in their science notebooks.
