My students work so very hard! Students with reading disabilities have difficulties in most classes because there is reading in just about every setting. Many students come from poor families with working parents and have limited resources and opportunities outside the walls of our school. My students come from various ethnic backgrounds and, at that impressionable age, are just trying to figure out who they are, what they want to do, and where their place is in the world. Middle school is a difficult time - students are self-conscious and hyper-aware while they are figuring everything out. Having a low reading level and therefore not able to read a Hunger Games book, for example, leaves my students even more separated and different from their typical peers. Providing them with the tools to build adequate reading skills, as well as interesting reading content to entice their attention and efforts, will not only build confidence but teach the skills necessary for future, lifelong success.
