The picture books I have selected are focused on uplifting, encouraging, and teaching life lessons. I have loved using mentor texts to help explain difficult or emotional concepts to my students. Several of these books will be used in the first few days of school, which are crucial to building a strong classroom community and fostering friendships. By reading these stories, I want to emphasize the importance of kindness, honesty, perseverance, and being inclusive of ALL students. Some of the books explore the growth mindset, which I would like to introduce into my teaching this year. I want my students to not be afraid of being themselves, being different, or failing. With these books, I plan to teach important character building lessons in a safe space, where my students can explore their feelings. As a second year teacher, I don't have a large library of picture books. This project would mean a great deal to my students to have access to beautiful illustrations and moving words.
