Our classroom works on collaboration, small group work and student discussion of mathematics. We need these dry erase easels for each small group to collaborate on mathematics problems daily. Research shows that mathematics learning increases markedly when students are given the opportunity to work in visibly random groups on vertical, non permanent surfaces. Our classroom needs six dry erase easels to allow students to collaborate in these groups and increase our learning of mathematics. Middle school mathematics students need to be engaged in "doing math" and not just hearing about math in a lecture format. Working problems and showing thinking on VNPS (vertical, non-permanent surfaces) allows students to engage mathematically with a small group of peers, share with the whole class, and engage in the problem solving process in ways that will improve their learning.
