In our middle school ALE, our students oftentimes are enduring abuse/neglect at home, disruptive behavior, trouble attaining proficiency in literacy or math, mental or physical health problems, moving schools frequently, and/or other factors which would make focus difficult. Our middle school ALE students get labeled as "the bad kids" because they have a lack of self-control and a bad relationship with the school. Then we ask them to sit for long periods of time to learn. Movement is essential to teaching them self-regulation. By providing flexible seating and bouncy bands for desks, we give them the tools they need to continue to move in an environment that is conducive to learning, reducing behavior problems.
