I teach sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in a self-contained resource room for students with special needs. Their disabilities include specific learning disability, cognitive delay, multiple disabilities, ADHD, and autism. Our school is in Ohio in a district where 99% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Although they have disabilities, they are surprisingly well-acquainted with technology. They love to use the computer, digital camera, my personal iPad, and anything else with buttons that they can manipulate. My students are good kids, but unfortunately, their circumstances often restrict their learning. They lack parental involvement, face disciplinary issues, and perform several grade levels below their peers.
