Students with special needs feel grounded and more secure when they have a safe, calming classroom. When anxiety or tempers start to arise, students can learn to self sooth in special locations or with special items within the classroom. Research has shown the effectiveness of weighted pieces such as vests or lap and shoulder pads for students with special needs. Lamps for reduced lighting and special seating will help create a more relaxed atmosphere where students could learn to self sooth before behaviors escalate. Smaller handheld items help to keep fidgety students focused.
With these new items, my special needs students will have the tools they need to become successful. My active students will be able to focus on teacher instruction and independent seat work with the use of fidget seats and small handheld items. Given the tools, my students will learn how to monitor their behaviors, and they will have a special seat or item to help them calm down or refocus their mind. Students with special needs can be successful in a special education as well as a regular education classroom with the right tools.
