Nothing beats hands-on activities to help children focus and make connections. Base ten blocks can be used to enhance students' number sense. Students will represent three-digit numbers with the blocks, such as 636. The blocks can also help students understand the fundamentals of regrouping. In a subtraction problem, students will cash in one ten, for ten ones. Children need time to play. Giving students balls for recess helps keep the free time fun and eliminate some of the problems that occur when students are bored. Having sports equipment that belongs to the teacher provides opportunities for breaks in the day in addition to recess, or PE.
