Adolescents’ attitudes toward reading are imperative to look at as a classroom English teacher. Students can build literacy competence through reading for pleasure, which as an educator, should inspire work to help foster students’ love of reading. Engaged reading correlates with improved reading proficiency, academic achievement, and learning, so it is crucial to find what will spark interest with students. By identifying students’ preferences based on their attitudes, teachers are able to tailor a course that meets students’ interests potentially increasing students’ value of reading. Many teachers believe students’ attitude toward reading can impact their reading achievement. Yet research suggests that few adolescents choose to read on their own. Thus, many students find reading and literacy activities to be unrewarding, too difficult, or not worth the effort because they do not meet their interests and needs causing them to become nonreaders or aliterate adolescents. It is essential to provide students with novels that pique their interests. Through using multicultural novels, students are able to find their reflection in the text increasing engagement as well.
