Rekenreks support the natural mathematical development of children and allow them to generate a variety of addition and subtraction strategies, including doubles plus or minus 1, making 10’s, and compensation. The rekenrek supports even the youngest learners with the visual models they need to discover number relationships and develop automaticity. The basic concept of a whole number being made up by parts is central to addition; if children can see the parts, then they can add the parts together to make the whole. Similarly, by taking away (subtracting) one of the parts from the whole, the children can find the missing part. Creating Number Bonds (part, part, whole) with Wikki Stix allows children of various skill levels to better grasp the concepts of number sense. The texture of the Wikki Stix enhances the activity and aids students that are physical/kinesthetic learners. Ten sided dice are critical to teaching kindergarten students ways to make ten. Students will be able to play games where they roll a die and ask each other "How many more would we need to make ten?" These dice are perfect for achieving fluency in number sense. Conventional six sided dice confuse young students when they are able to roll numbers higher than 10. Creating number sense rather than strictly rote memorization allows for students of varying skill levels to achieve a better understanding of math concepts, building accuracy, speed, and most importantly, confidence in all areas of math. All of these skills are critical as they progress throughout higher grade levels.
